Grilled Cheese Man

During Summer Cooking Camp, volunteers and campers gathered in the kitchen at St. Thomas to prepare their ingredients together. Apples, spinach, jams, and an assortment of cheeses covered the tables—much to the dismay of a few campers who firmly believed vegetables belonged only in the garden.

As slices of bread were laid out, Mr. Larry issued a simple challenge:
“Be creative.”

One imaginative girl took the assignment to heart—and to a whole new dimension. While the instructor turned away momentarily, she crafted Gerald: a charming grilled cheese man with a square face of golden American cheese, nestled atop white bread. His mouth a bright apple slice, his eyes tiny pools of jam, and his teeth—meticulously carved from white cheddar—grinned with surprising personality.

Gerald wasn’t just a sandwich. He was a masterpiece.

And at Cooking Camp, that’s exactly the kind of creativity we love to see.
