Answer the Call
In early September on a Friday morning my phone rang and a number with a 34 area code popped up on the screen. Certain it was a scam I put my phone down, but something told me just answer it. The worst that’ll happen is I hang up. I pressed that green circle button and said hello.
Hello Ms Stephanie. It’s Demetri Lee. You might not remember me but I grew up at FPR and was just calling to say hello.
I remember him. We all do. This skinny little eight year old with a huge smile and even bigger passion. He’ll always be the kid who found a leather briefcase and carried it around for a year, requesting that everyone call him Professor Demetri.
What I wasn’t expecting was this man’s voice, calling me from Germany.
I must say, I’m a little not happy because now I have to answer my phone every time it rings. But I also realized something. When I was talking with Demetri, I asked if this was his number so I could save it and share it with the rest of the staff. He said it is for now, but when he got transferred to a different base it would change. I asked him to make sure and let us know his new number. Hours after I hung up the phone, I realized his number, his phone had changed many times over the years. But he saved our number.
