TRADITIONS

One muggy afternoon, Alan told us he found a SFMS t-shirt by the basketball goal and took it. Puzzled by his excitement, I recommended he wash it before he wear it then went to help with homework.

About an hour later, I walked into the Teen Room adjacent to the Library and discovered Alan, a 5th grader, sitting by the computers chatting with the middle schoolers. As I sat next to Alan he began his defense, “What, it’s ok. I’m wearing the shirt…”

When I patted him on the shoulder to commend his effort and guide him out of the room (he was not yet old enough to enter), I realized he was indeed wearing the still damp, sweat drenched, rain soaked SFMS t-shirt.

This is the genius, resourcefulness, and creativity that flourishes when children strive to overcome obstacles and get what they want. From accessing the Teen Room to becoming a FPR Volunteer, the bar has been set for our participants to become leaders. They will follow in the footsteps of other FPR Alumni who have graduated from high school, hung their university pennant in the FPR Library, and embarked on their future careers.
